Gillian Ansell: Viola

Gillian made her concerto debut as violinist with the Auckland Symphonia (Auckland Philharmonia) at 16 years of age. She was awarded an Associated Board Scholarship to the Royal College of Music, London where she won several prizes on violin and viola.She took up a German Academic Exchange DAAD scholarship at the Musikhochschule in Cologne with Igor Ozim and the Amadeus Quartet. After working professionally in London for three years she returned to New Zealand in 1987 to become a founding member of the New Zealand String Quartet. In 2001 she became Artistic Director, with fellow quartet member Helene Pohl, of the Adam New Zealand Festival of Chamber Music. In the 2008 New Year's Honours list she became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM).

 
Miranda Adams: Conductor

 Miranda Adams was born in Dunedin, and completed a B.Mus, P.G.Dip in both violin and conducting from Otago University in 1986, the same year she was a finalist in the TVNZ/NZSO Young Musician Competition, performing Dvorak violin concerto with the NZSO.

She then moved to Nelson and became the resident conductor of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra from 1988-93, with 6 concerts a year of both standard repertoire, commissions (the opera "At the Hawks Well" by Nigel Keay a highlight), and on 2 occasions conducting and performing (Vivaldi The Four Seasons, and Beethoven’s violin concerto).

Justine Cormack: Violin

 Justine is a former Concertmaster of the Auckland Philharmonia. She has also played with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and New Zealand Chamber Orchestra, and continues to appear regularly throughout NZ as a recitalist, chamber musician, adjudicator and concerto soloist. Justine has received many awards, including a TVNZ Young Achievers Award, two QEII Arts Council Grants, a Fulbright Scholarship and an NZSO Alex Lindsay Memorial Award. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Joanna Drimatis: Conductor

 Joanna holds degrees in Music Education and Violin Performance from the University of Western Australia and the Canberra School of Music as well as a PhD in Musicology. In 1996 she completed a Masters in Music ,at the University of Texas in Austin, in violin and conducting. In March-April 2000 she undertook private conducting studies with David Effron at Indiana University, Bloomington. Joanna has been a masterclass participant in conducting workshops given by the Auckland Philharmonia and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra with Miguel Harth-Bedoya and Matthias Bamert.

Ashley Brown: Cello

 Ashley is currently cellist for the New Zealand Trio. He has taught cello at the Universities of Waikato and Canterbury. He has been Principal Cellist of the National Youth Orchestra, the Yale Philharmonia and the Auckland Philharmonia and Cellist of the Turnovsky Trio. He now teaches at Auckland University. Ashley studied at Canterbury University with Alexander Ivashkin, graduating with Distiniction as a Master of Music. During this time he won the TVNZ Young Musicians Competition, the CCMC National Concerto Competition and a special prize at the ROSL Music Competition in London.

David Sharp: Conductor

David was awarded a Bachelor of Music Performance with Honours in Conducting from the University of Adelaide in 1995. Since graduating he has conducted many of the major symphony orchestras in Australia, appeared on television and radio and conducted orchestras overseas. He enjoys an increasingly important role with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra where he is the conductor and director for their Family Concert Series and regional tours. As an active participant in Symphony Australia's Conductor Development Program, David has conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Camille White: Oboe

 Camille began her performance studies at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, with further education at Indiana University, the New England Conservatory of Music and Curtis Institute of Music, where she held the Sheldon Bonovitz Fellowship. She has played with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the Aspen Festival Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and is currently the Associate Principal Oboe with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Emma Richards: French Horn

Emma Richards began playing the tenor horn at the age of nine years old in the Timaru Brass Band, but later realised the French horn was a better career choice. She graduated from Massey University at the end of 2006 with first class honours in performance. While studying Emma won the position of second horn in Vector Wellington Orchestra, played principal horn in the National Youth Orchestra and was an active freelancer throughout New Zealand performing with the Christchurch Symphony and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. In 2007 Emma won the Alex Lindsay Memorial Award and travelled to Canada, where she attended the Banff Summer Music Festival and auditioned successfully for the Festival Orchestra. Playing the horn has also taken Emma to China, London, Tonga, the Middle East and Australia, where she played with the Melbroune Symphony Orchestra. In 2008 Emma was offered a trial for principal third horn in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and is currently on probation for this position.

Simone Roggen: Violin

Simone Roggen has just completed a Concert Diploma at the University of Arts in Bern, Switzerland. In September she will begin the highest level study , the Soloist Diploma.

She began with Suzuki violin lessons as a pre schooler and completed her studies with Mary O�Brien at the University of Auckland with a Masters of Music with first class honours in 2004. Through chamber music and orchestras, the violin has taken her to places such as Austria, Italy, Denmark, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, Tonga and around New Zealand. As a soloist she has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia, Christchurch Symphony, Auckland Youth Orchestra, and will perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Biel Symphony (Switzerland) in August this year.

Winner of the New Zealand National Chamber music Competition in 1997 and 1998, she has continued enjoying this genre by giving concerts in Switzerland, Denmark, Austria and winning chamber music prizes at university. Simone has been a member of orchestras since she was 8 and was Concertmaster of different orchestras since she was 11.

Michael Joel: Conductor

Michael's conducting training began at Otago University with an Honours degree in conducting. He has taken part in several Masterclasses with such conductors as Heinz Wahlberg, James Judd, and Miguel Harth-Bedoya and has lessons with Jac van Steen in The Netherlands. He has also attended the Dartington International Summer School in England.

He has conducted many of the established orchestras and choirs throughout New Zealand and is equally at home in the orchestral, choral and operatic repertoire. He has worked with the Christchurch Symphony, the Southern Sinfonia, St Matthew's Chamber Orchestra, Opera Otago, the City of Dunedin Choir and the National Youth Orchestra.

Michael McLellanMichael McLellan has been concertmaster for St Matthew's Chamber Orchestra for the past 16 years. Michael is a professional musician who divides his time between teaching, performing and conducting. He began his career as a violinist, graduating from the Royal College of Music in London and working in orchestras in the UK. Michael was a member of the Symphonia of Auckland for many years and of the Auckland Philharmonia during its formative years. He was a founding member of the Auckland Sinfonietta, a member of the Auckland Chamber Orchestra and a Radio New Zealand Artist. As well as teaching privately, Michael is an itinerant teacher of violin and viola at seven Auckland Secondary Schools.
